Understand Industry 5.0
Read the Smart Manufacturing ecosystem end to end — where the technology is genuinely mature, and where it is still promise.

Intelligent factories, connected ecosystems and data-driven decisions now define competitive advantage. An eight-month executive programme for CXOs, plant heads and operations leaders driving digital transformation at enterprise scale.
Manufacturing is moving from experimenting with digital technology to running on it. NITI Aayog analysis indicates full adoption of advanced manufacturing could add roughly USD 1 trillion to India's manufacturing GDP by 2047 and generate over 100 million skilled jobs. The question for leaders is no longer whether to invest, but how to sequence, govern and scale it. That is where IIM Calcutta's Advanced Programme in Smart Manufacturing Leadership (APSML) comes in.
Across eight months of weekend learning, participants explore Artificial Intelligence, Industrial IoT, Robotics, Digital Twins, Smart Factories, Cloud Computing and Sustainable Manufacturing — while building the strategic capability to lead enterprise-wide digital transformation, through case discussions, faculty-led sessions and a capstone business project.

Unlike generic digital transformation programmes, APSML focuses specifically on manufacturing, operations, supply chain, quality, and industrial leadership.
Gain practical understanding of Artificial Intelligence, Industrial IoT, Robotics, Digital Twins, Cloud Manufacturing, ESG, Supply Chain 5.0, and Operational Excellence.
Move beyond technology to understand leadership, organizational transformation, change management, finance, sustainability, and innovation.
Manufacturing has always absorbed new technology. The assembly line, statistical process control, lean, ERP — each arrived promising transformation, and each eventually became simply how a good plant runs. Industry 4.0 and 5.0 differ in one respect. They are arriving together, across every part of the operation at once, and faster than most organisations can absorb them.
Between us we have spent our careers on two sides of the same problem. One of us studies how manufacturing, operations and supply networks actually perform — the strategy, policy and operating decisions that separate plants which keep improving from plants which plateau. The other works on data, analytics and responsible AI, and on how organisations turn information into decisions they can defend. Working with Indian manufacturers, we keep meeting the same person: a capable, experienced leader who can see that IIoT, digital twins, predictive maintenance and AI matter, but who has no clear way to decide which of them matters to their plant, in what order, and at what cost.
That gap is not closed by buying technology. The evidence is consistent — the constraint on smart manufacturing is rarely the technology itself. It is fragmented data, legacy systems, and a shortage of leaders who can sequence a transformation and carry an organisation through it.
This programme is built for that gap. It will not turn you into a data scientist or an automation engineer. It will make you fluent enough to evaluate a smart manufacturing investment, to test a vendor's claim, to design the operating model a connected factory actually needs, and to lead the people whose work will change because of it.
Across the modules we move from the Industry 5.0 landscape into automation and connected operations, through AI and decision intelligence, supply chain resilience, sustainability, innovation, finance and the future of work. The Business Project brings all of it back to where it matters: you will assess the digital maturity of your own organisation and build a transformation roadmap for it, mentored by IIM Calcutta faculty.
We look forward to working through that roadmap with you — online, and at Joka.
